However the rewards of success are vast: Currently the cost of installation of rural fibre is a minimum of R300,000 per kilometre in the most benign geo-technical conditions in Southern Africa. Manual labourers take man years to dig 60 cm trenches per kilometre. It is the goal of the company that the trenching system will enable the installation at a better rate of one kilometre per day per trenching machine with just one secure manhole per kilometre.
The company is confident that this will result in the reducing of the cost of fibre installation to just R30,000 rand per kilometre. This will transform the economics of providing fibre to rural communities and profoundly change the ability youths who face 70% unemployment in South African rural areas to be able to educate themselves and to create their own jobs.
