The innovations sought out by Rapid Fibre cover the three key areas of installation, investigation and maintenance of critical telecommunications network infrastructure. The technological advances being sought are challenging the industry standards by delivering solutions over a scale that hasn’t been attempted until now. Each of the Innovations bring about a revolutionary method of achieving monumental coverage of a widespread network ensuring swift delivery and efficient preservation.
The Duct Bot was conceived out of necessity after assessing the monumental scale of the network installation across Southern Africa. It is the first in a series of duct-based robots and is able to traverse the huge distance of 500m of duct between access points to investigate the structural integrity, potential cable damage and possible contamination using HD cameras and LED lighting arrays.
The Tug Bot is related to the Duct Bot in basic design but evolved to provide assistance in the great task of supplying up to 500m worth of draw rope and fibre cable through buried ducting. The topographical nature of the ground across Sothern Africa varies greatly and causes major deviation from a true course and with it the requirement for necessary bends in the ducting. These bends add differing levels of tension and strain on the fibre cable/draw rope leading to reduced effectiveness and even cessation of the Cable Bot’s activities. To prevent total suspension of works, the Tug Bot will position itself at the start of a series of notably increased tension, grab the snagged material and carry it through to provide slack, enabling the Cable Bot to resume unlimited activities.
The Trencher-Reinstater was sought as a solution to the huge distances that need to be dug out and installed with utility ducting. An innovation was required to meet the demand for great distances and the ability to self-navigate following a predefined route. This Trencher-Reinstater has been devised to dig at a rapid rate and backfill the dig site to try to conceal scarring and camouflage the ground.
